The Wire was a shift in television series because of the way it viewed the subject: it was "nitty-gritty" in the real sense. Terrific characters that are so well-developed, it's hard to adjust to some of the murders, but it makes sense for the plot-lines and the realistic nature of the drug trade. Nice set. The packaging is simple, but looks nice up on my shelf unit next to my other box sets. It makes you select a star, I wouldn’t have even give one. I love shows with literally dozens of good characters - spearheaded by Hill Street Blues and up and through LOST, but I rate this the best. Many, including myself, were thrilled that HBO let David Simon do his best to ensure that the HD version would not be terribly jarring to all of us that love the SD version. Shame on HBO for this piece. so basically each season starts on an arc that will continue throughout the entire season, wrapping itself up at the end for a new case to start the following year/season. Shame on HBO for this piece. I love to watch entire series at least once a year and this is one which demands to be seen sequentially.
Unlike so many shows that are fake, this one seems very true to life and paints a very accurate picture of drugs, crime, corruption, on all levels (street, law enforcement, politicians, etc..) I think my mind's eye tends to naturally crop the few scenes that don't seem to work as well for me. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!
This is a must-see series, probably one of the best ever written,among the ranks of NYPD Blue, Law and Order, and Breaking Bad. Similar to HBO's Game of Thrones, there are a lot of characters and it took me a season or so to remember everyone's name/who everyone is, but, once I did, this show was amazing and definitely something I will likely watch a second time through.
Repeated viewings only increase my respect for David Simon and Ed Burns. It virtually guaranteed your discs would come out with scratches, no matter how careful you were.
Not just the episodes, which are nicely presented and in excellent video quality, but the additional content including prequels, all of which add depth to the series.

And did we mention Idris Elba and Michael K Williams in breakout roles? It's the writing, stupid! Overall I highly recommend The Wire on Blu Ray although I won't be getting rid of my Wire dvd's anytime soon. Awesome series!
