tale of the bamboo cutter

In différence entre mythe et histoire

The story itself is very sweet and funny - the lengths the suitors would go to! The author is unknown, since it was probably written in the Heian era (794-1185). I would recommend this to anyone, even if you usually think that fairy tales are children's stories (try reading the originals of Grimm's and H.C. Andersen, you'd be surprised), this is a highly interesting piece of literature.A lovely fairy-tale about a girl from the moon who is so lovely that men can help but fall in love with her.

The story contains tales of adventures, magical elements, and a tragic ending. I might even add: the first science fiction story, due to the "Moon people" and the princess being from out of this world. The 10th century tale of the beautiful Moon Princess, famous throughout Japan. The story itself is very sweet and funny - the lengths the suitors would go to!

You're a villain or a hero, benign or malign.

The import made the text very very small! So it has most of the classic fairy-tale elements. At first it seems quite ordinary, a childless man finds a tiny girl outside (maybe H.C. Andersen got inspiration for Thumbelina here?)

She writes letters of farewell to her friends and family and leaves with the celestial entourage who come to collect her. I checked out a beautiful illustrated version and read it aloud to my grandma in a few sittings. After cutting it open, he found inside it an infant the size of his thumb. I read it as part of my reading bucket list - one book a week of the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die.
There are a variety of versions, apparently, but this edition is very well done-- telling the story in English and Japanese, amid some very beautiful artwork. The import made the text very very small!

Not that far from Western fairy tales at first, but then, wow, does it surprise!

Now that's out of the way...This story is the oldest surviving story of Japanese fiction. It's the story of a poor bamboo cutter who discovers a tiny, beautiful princess in a stick of bamboo.

Turns out she's really an alien (from the moon) sent to earth aFound this Japanese fairy tale on the Project Gutenberg site in a compilation book by Yei Theodora Ozaki.

Beautiful imagery, and a very sad ending :(This is probably the only one in the “1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die” list with no indicated author as it is too old. The Emperor, distraught, hurries to the mountain to burn a letter to his lost love. Published At first it seems quite ordinary, a childless man finds a tiny girl outside (maybe H.C. Its exact date of writing is even in dispute, some saying it first appeared in the late 9th century, others saying it was in the early 10th century. Tiny being found in the forest by a bamboo-cutter.

The author is unknown, since it was probably written in the Heian era (794-1185). It contains parallel Japanese and English text, some beautiful illustrations of traditional Japanese style, all printed on very high-quality paper.
